Ashtanga Yoga is a strong and vibrant mix of postures that provide a form of physical meditation. Combined with pranayama (breath and energy flow) and various traditional meditation techniques, Ashtanga yoga is an all round mind and body enhancing programme.
The practice of yoga is well known to bring about not only a lean and healthy body, but a quietening of the mind. The ability to train the mind, becoming aware of the 'mind chatter' that can be so negative, and the ability to control the thoughts in the mind.
This is brought about by using asanas (postures) to first control and purify the body, Pranayama (breath and energy flow), and various mediation techniques to in the initial stages relax, and in the more experienced to experience varying degrees of consciousness.
In the West we primarily focus on the postures - it is commonly known 'that yoga is good for us'. The different styles of yoga vary and can be confusing. Which class to go to? Hatha, Satyananda, Bikram, Ashtanga, Iyenga, Yin, Dru, the list and choices all seem to go on.
All the postures are essentially the same, based on the Hatha Yoga Pradipika. It is how the asana are either linked, the duration of the postures, and the props used in practice, the temperature of the room, the focus on postures vs breath work, the attention to 'alignment', that differ.
Your Ashtanga teacher, ,b>Susan Dennis, has been practising Ashtanga yoga for six years and teachers under the umbrella of the British Wheel of Yoga. She is experienced in Ashtanga, Hatha and Satyananda (training in the UK under Jayadhara), combining both Northern and Southern Indian traditions and styles.
Ashtanga Yoga classes are held at The Happiness Centre in Ilkley on Friday evenings 6 pm - 7.30 pm.
Hatha Yoga classes are available, subject to interest.
